18 hour stop over in Bangkok?

I am flying to Europe via Bangkok and will arrive at 6am Monday morning and will leave at midnight that night. I am after any ideas for something to do for the day that is cheap and local (not too far away from the international airport) such as historical sites or markets etc. Thanks for your ideas :)
