Manual compression test question?

I basically have the whole engine apart because I thought the timing belt broke and - long story... Anyway, My Q: Can I do a compression test on the engine by manually cranking it.. Crank it with a 19MM socket / rachet on the crank-shaft pulley by turning CW.. Be as detailed as possible - Thanks
