Can I connect an older computer with a dead monitor to this new laptop to view old files?

I'm sure I'll want to transfer some of the old files to the new laptop, but before I even try that, I need to know if I'll be able to see what I'm doing without having another working monitor. Please answer in "For Dummies" language. (I'm really technologically illiterate.)
