Scientists, can't you be more creative?

I am no scientist, but I enjoy watching shows and doentarys about certain scientific things, especially plantets and the solar system. It seems that whenever they are answering some questions, like how did the moon form, why is a planet a certain way, or some such thing, the answer seems to basically be " a rock hit it" Such as a comet, asteroid etc.. Isn't there any other expinations for these things? It seems unlikely that every planetary phenomenon can be explained this way.
