When you're hypnotized do you actually believe the hypnotist or just go along with it?

I was hypnotized in the audience of a hypnotist show, but I didn't actually do any of the things the hypnotist suggested besides going to sleep and waking up. I don't remember much of the show, but the people I was with said I was like a zombie the whole show. I don't know if I was actually hypnotized or just in a weird trace. I am the type of person who laughs at everything, but apparently I didn't laugh the whole time or make much facial expressions. I remember thinking that what the hypnotist was saying wasn't true so I didn't want to do it. I was wondering if I could have been hypnotized but not acted on the hypnotist's suggestions like the people on stage did.
